What to write in a gift message

A good gift message names the person, says one true, warm thing and signs off: "Happy birthday, Sam. You make every week better. Love, Alex."

By Behzad Hosseini, founder of Next Day Gifts · Updated 7 October 2026

Key points

  • Use their name, one warm and specific sentence, and your sign-off.
  • Short beats long: 10 to 25 words reads best on a card or an e-card.
  • Be specific: a memory or a quality says more than "you're great".
  • Our free e-card takes up to 300 characters and is emailed at 8am on the first day the gift could arrive.

How do you write a gift message?

Use a three-part formula:

  1. Their name, so it feels personal: "Happy birthday, Sam."
  2. One true, warm thing: a memory, a thank you or what you wish for them.
  3. Your sign-off: "Love, Alex" or "With love from all of us".

Keep it to one or two sentences. If you're sending the gift straight to them, our free e-card emails your message on the first day the gift could arrive.
